Phoretic mite assemblage of the pinyon pine beetle, Ips confusus (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), in Arizona

Mites are among the most common associates of bark beetles and they can influence ecology microbial composition within beetle-colonized trees. The pinyon pine engraver, Ips confusus is a beetle in trees southwestern United States, but mite associated with this has been little studied. In study, we quantify abundance, diversity, attachment locations phoretic mites on that emerge from naturally infested total, observed 342 for mites, 95% which had at least one mite. We collected total 5842 representing seven families species: Cercoleipus coelonotus (Cercomegistidae) Dendrolaelaps quadrisetosimilis (Digamasellidae), Ereynetes propescutulis (Ereynetidae), Iponemus (Tarsonemidae), Mexecheles cf. virginiensis (Cheyletidae), Proctolaelaps subcorticalis (Melicharidae), Trichouropoda californica (Trematuridae). calculated average number per to be 18, maximum 147 single beetle. vast majority (98% abundance) was represented by three species (I. c. confusus, D. quadrisetosimilis, T. californica). Attachment varied across species, exhibiting preference specific locations. Mite abundances emerging host over time, some occurring mostly early-emerging beetles, while others occurred later beetles.
